Thanks for the memory jog. I recall now seeing your tweet or FB mention of Armstrong. Now I'll go back and actually read!

Friends, I just noticed your event, a year late! Hope it went wonderfully. While I remain at the hospital doing clinical work three days per week, I am adding positive psychology coaching to my repertoire. One thing I've been suggesting folks do ...

I just read an ON FAITH post in the Washington Post by Karen Armstrong - and in it I learned that the Socratic method was intended as a spiritual practice - would never have guessed it given my law school days and subsequent many, many years as a ...

It's only a matter of time . . . good endeavors expand . . .

I joined because I saw it was yours and wanted to check it out. I think there is a great deal of wisdom in local online communities - possibly more potential impact then widespread ones because members can actually get together and do something together - make personal in-person connections - etc.

Anyway it's all grist for the mill as we try to figure out how to use this new technology to help shift perspectives and encourage change. xo

John - yes, that work thing can get in the way of things. :)

Sorry you missed the gathering this evening. It was excellent. Our theme was "Welcoming dissent" and avoiding the Road to Abilene (a story about unexpressed dissent).

The 2 questions we used were:

Q1: What are your doubts and reservations about expressing dissent?
Q2: What is the cost to you and others for your unexpressed dissent?

If we'd had more time, I think we could have kept going. We had a request to talk about how to "receive" dissent from others. Stay tuned, we may pursue this one again.

Hope to see you at an intensive soon. Will you be at the July 18th one?

thx Elaine

Thanks John. I like this site but I don't check it often enough. What possibilities are stirring in your heart. Peter's book drew me to this site and I have already met Elaine Hansen, who is amazing. I notice Elaine has a post below. Let's talk more, John.

What is your Neighborhood?
Mariemont
Although A Small Group is currently based in Cincinnati, Ohio, we have friends and fellow community members in Dayton, Columbus, Indianapolis and many other places. Regardless of your location, we invite you to join us. Please tell us a little about your community (or country, for that matter!).
Mariemont is a small suburban community of the Cincinnati area.
What is your work? -- NOTE: all of these Q's may be updated any time and may be as brief or as long as you wish.
What I do for money is I am a mental health therapist at a hospital psychiatric unit. I am also a dissertation away from my PhD, Psychology.

In the civic sense I'm a member of the advisory council of Secretary Brunner's Voting Rights Institute and have been actively engaged in election reform for the past four years. Decades ago I was a U.S. Senate intern, and more recently was campaign staff for a congressional election.

Creatively I'm a guitarist and have started playing again after years on hold.
What originally brought you to A Small Group? What brought you to this ASG site?
Four years ago I was commiserating with fellow campaign staff discussing our future and what we could do. A woman at the meeting, Barbara Chin, said there's a guy I think you should meet, Peter Block. I had the opportunity to train with Peter several months later and subsequently found ASG.
With what organizations or groups do you work today?
I mentioned some of this above. I'm at the Voting Rights Institute; just stepped down as President of the Greater Cincinnati Counseling Association; serve on the Gov't Relations Committee of the Ohio Counseling Association; was on the steering committee of Democracy for Cincinnati; am an early joiner of Citizens' Alliance for Secure Elections (CASE Ohio).
ASG Questions: Select one to answer below, if you like (or pass - that's always ok):
What Possibility is stirring in your heart today?
Your current answer to the selected question (you may update this and other profile items any time):
The possibility that the country may actually step back from the course toward fascism it is currently on.

Beyond summer's nonsense . . .

Is there really a place for civic engagement in a civil manner?

Visit Democracy, Growing Up at Public Agenda, a non-partisan public interest organization founded by social scientist and author Daniel Yankelovich and former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance in 1975.

Yankelovich was an early supporter, if not initiator, of a changing the conversation approach familiar to many of us here.

Best,

John in Cincinnati

Ohio Elections Conference March 12 & 13

Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner just announced a second Elections Conference March 12–13 in Columbus. I do not at this time have a detailed agenda but can say this will be a non- and bipartisan event working toward better elections.

Thinking about voting absentee? Consider this.

Hamilton County, OH - Unless your precinct had especially long lines or you will really be out of town, I recommend voting in-person at your precinct. Here’s why. Approximately 12% of the absentee ballots cast in Hamilton County did not count vs. about 3% residuals at the precinct in race for Governor (2006). Despite what candidates, parties and some activists recommend I believe voting in-person at the precinct is the better option. Even if you vote your ballot early at the… Continue
